The Gold Room have been crafting unique jewellery from natural New Zealand gold nuggets for over 20 years.
Westland Gold
The gold found in the Westland region of New Zealand is among the purest in the world.
It is also among the rarest, appearing mostly in the form of alluvial gold.
With only around 2% of all gold mined in the world today found in nugget form, nuggets are rarer to find than diamonds by volume.
History
Eureka! Was the catch cry when gold was first discovered by explorers in Westland 1864.
This sparked one of New Zealand's largest gold rushes and was comparable to the rushes of California in 1849 and Klondike in 1900.
It is not surprising that many of the same men were involved, travelling between the California, Victoria Australia and New Zealand goldfields.
Hokitika and its Port became the capital of the bustling West Cost goldfields and at one stage boasted 102 hotels, 84 of which were in endless succession along one of the main streets.

The Gold Room's gold nugget jewellery combines the beauty of nature with the creativity of human craftsmanship.
Philosophy
Our philosophy is to leave the nuggets in their natural state, preserving the unique forms from the ground. Nature crafts the gold nugget, we craft the jewellery.
Precious
A gold nugget ring from The Gold Room is a thing of rare beauty, and beautiful rarity.
Most Westland gold is very fine and rare beach gold, small gold flakes and prized nugget sized pieces.
Not all nuggets are able to be used in the production of jewellery, making each ring even more precious.
Our Studio
In our store in Hokitiika, you will see the West Coast's rich gold mining story come to life in the form of desirable jewellery made from genuine gold nuggets that have been sourced from present day goldmines.
Photos and artefacts of current and historic mining, adorn the shop. View two, 3 meter long gold mining models with miniature sluice guns, gold dredge, gold miners, and water wheels.
